I wanted to share something that comes up with so many dog owners, especially when they’re working on recall or focus outside. It’s completely normal for a dog to listen beautifully indoors but struggle the moment you step into the garden, onto the pavement or into the park.

Your dog isn’t ignoring you or being stubborn. They’re simply facing a level of difficulty they haven’t been taught to handle yet.

Dogs learn in context.
When they learn a behaviour in your living room, they’ve learned it *in your living room*. Every new environment feels like a different lesson, with new smells, sounds, movement and distractions to process.

Outdoors is full of sensory information: wildlife, people, dogs, cars, wind, movement everywhere. It’s not disobedience—it’s overload.

A behaviour that feels easy at home is usually just the foundation. Reliability comes from gradually increasing difficulty in a way your dog can succeed. Think of it like building a staircase: each step prepares your dog for the next.

Here’s a simple recall progression you can follow:

• Indoors: Say your dog’s name and reward the moment they look at you.
• Garden: Same exercise, new environment.
• Quiet outdoor spaces: Short sessions, high-value rewards.
• Long line training: More freedom while staying safe.
• Add distractions slowly: One new challenge at a time.

If your dog struggles, it simply means the step was too big. Go back one stage, rebuild confidence, and move forward again when they’re ready.
